Self-Organizing Into Winning Teams: Understanding the Mechanisms That Drive Successful Collaborations

چکیده
Contemporary teams are self-assembling with increasing frequency, meaning the component members are choosing to join forces with some degree of agency rather than being assigned to work with one another. However, the majority of the teams literature up until this point has focused on randomly assigned or staffed teams. Thus, the purpose of the current study was to investigate how people do form into teams and how people should form into teams. Specifically, we utilized a sample of digital traces from a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (N = 1,568) to evaluate the bases for and performance implications of team self-assembly. The results indicated that self-assembled teams form via three mechanisms: homophily, familiarity, and proximity. Moreover, results of the trace data analyses indicated that successful and unsuccessful teams were homogeneous in terms of different characteristics, and successful teams formed based on friendship more often than unsuccessful teams did. 1California State University, Long Beach, USA 2Northwestern University, Evanston, IL, USA Corresponding Author: Amy Wax, California State University, Long Beach, PSY 100, 1250 Bellflower Boulevard, Long Beach, CA 90840, USA. Group Maintenance in Technology-Supported Distributed Teams
Are geographically-distributed teams which exhibit high levels of group maintenance between members successful? We answer this through content analysis of emails from two Free/Libre Open Source Software (FLOSS) teams. Our results illustrate that the groups utilize low levels of organizational citizenship behaviors and high levels of positive politeness actions. INTRODUCTION Small groups or team...
متن کاملSelf-stable Omnidirectional Walking with Compliant Joints
Bipedal walking is one of the most essential skills in humanoid robot soccer. A stable and fast gait gives teams a winning edge when their robots are the first at the ball, maintain ball control with sure feet, and drive the ball decisively towards the opponent goal. The most successful teams in the Humanoid League are typically characterized by reliably walking robots. In this contribution, we...
متن کاملA data partition method for parallel self-organizing map
We propose a method to partition training vectors into clusters for a parallel implementation of Self-organizing Map (SOM) algorithm The proposed algorithm assigns a cluster to a processor such that, in updating weights, the neighborhoods of a winning node in a cluster do not overlap the neighboring nodes of some winning nodes in other clusters. It reduces the overheads caused by synchronizatio...
متن کاملDecision-Making Processes and Team Performance in Self-Organizing Virtual Teams: The Case of Free/Libre Open Source Software Development Teams
Effective decision making is critical to team effectiveness. We examine decision making in the setting of self-organizing virtual teams, a setting that we expect to pose particular problems for effective decision making. A self-organizing team must develop effective practices in the absence of a formal organizational structure that guides the practices. A virtual team’s reliance on technologica...
